In a whirlwind of family pride and program momentum, four-star safety Andre Jones Jr. officially committed to Notre Dame on June 22, moments after his older brother, four-star wide receiver Julius Jones Jr., made the same pledge during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

The 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back from Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School — one of Florida’s premier programs — chose the Irish over standout offers from Indiana, UCLA, and others. He becomes Notre Dame’s second commitment in the 2028 class. 

A Family Legacy Reborn

Andre is the son of former Notre Dame running back Julius Jones Sr., who rushed for 3,018 yards and 27 touchdowns during his Irish career in the early 2000s before a second-round NFL selection by the Dallas Cowboys. His uncle, Thomas Jones, was an All-American at Virginia and enjoyed a long, productive NFL career.

The Jones brothers’ back-to-back commitments represent more than just talent acquisition — they signal the continuation of a cherished Notre Dame bloodline. Andre’s father has long been a visible presence in South Bend circles, and the family’s deep ties to the program made the decision feel predestined.

What Andre Jones Jr. Brings to the Defense

At St. Thomas Aquinas, Jones contributed immediately as a sophomore in 2025, recording 37 tackles, 1 interception, and 4 pass breakups across 13 games in a loaded secondary that helped the Raiders win back-to-back Florida 5A state titles. 

His most impressive traits emerged at the Rivals Miami Elite Camp in February 2026, where he was the top overall performer at cornerback during one-on-one drills. Rivals director of scouting Charles Power noted: “The rising junior showed advanced coverage skills and was able to stay in-phase with receivers. He made an impressive pass breakup during red zone 1-on-1’s, showing a quick break on the ball. The 2028 prospect looks to have good size along with positional versatility, with the capability of lining up at multiple spots in the secondary.” 

Jones projects as a versatile defensive back who can play free safety, strong safety, or nickel (slot) depending on the package. Notre Dame’s defense under Marcus Freeman values players who can handle man coverage, drop into zones, and contribute in run support — exactly the skill set Jones has flashed. His length, ball skills, and tackling production as an underclassman give him a high floor, while his camp explosiveness and instincts point to significant upside as he adds strength and experience.

Player comps: Jones’ combination of coverage polish, quick breaks on the ball, and multi-positional flexibility draws natural comparisons to versatile NFL safeties like a young Derwin James — a player who dominated multiple secondary roles early in his career.
