Notre Dame Inks Record Jersey Patch Deal with SoFi

In a move that is already generating buzz across the college sports landscape, the University of Notre Dame Athletics announced Tuesday a landmark multi-year partnership with SoFi Technologies, making the financial services company the official partner of Fighting Irish athletics and the first non-apparel brand to appear as a jersey patch sponsor across all Notre Dame sports. The six-year deal is expected to be the richest jersey sponsorship in college athletics history, valued at an average of $18–20 million annually — surpassing even Ohio State’s recently announced pact with JPMorgan Chase. Over its lifetime, the agreement is worth well into nine figures. SoFi’s logo will begin appearing on Fighting Irish uniforms starting this fall.

Details and Benefits of the Partnership

Beyond the prominent jersey patches, the collaboration positions SoFi as Notre Dame’s official financial services partner. It includes the creation of the SoFi Champions Scholarship program to support walk-on athletes who exemplify grit and leadership. Additional elements feature financial education initiatives for student-athletes and enhanced perks for fans. Athletics Director Pete Bevacqua and SoFi CEO Anthony Noto highlighted shared values of ambition and excellence in the announcement. Notre Dame Global Partnerships (a joint venture between Legends Global and JMI Sports) helped facilitate the deal.

Mixed Fan Reactions

As with many pioneering moves in the rapidly commercializing world of college sports, the news has drawn mixed feedback from the Notre Dame faithful. Traditionalists lament the addition of corporate branding to the iconic, minimalist uniforms that have long symbolized purity and tradition — especially on the football team’s gold helmets and classic jerseys. Social media has been filled with comments ranging from “This is the end of what made Notre Dame special” to more pragmatic takes acknowledging economic realities. Critics worry about the “professionalization” of college athletics and potential visual clutter on the field. Some fans question whether the substantial financial upside is worth any perceived dilution of the program’s unique aura.

The Future of College Sports

Yet, this deal likely represents the unavoidable — and in many ways necessary — future of big-time college athletics. With the House settlement, revenue sharing, NIL collectives, and skyrocketing operational costs, programs like Notre Dame are under immense pressure to generate new revenue streams without compromising academic or competitive integrity.

Jersey patches are already becoming standard across Power conferences, and Notre Dame — as an independent with one of the most valuable brands in sports — is uniquely positioned to maximize their worth. Officials view this as a strategic step to better support athletes, invest in facilities, and maintain competitiveness in an era where traditional TV deals and ticket sales alone no longer suffice. In the broader landscape, this isn’t an isolated event. Ohio State’s similar move the same day signals a wave. What feels jarring today will likely look routine in a few years, much like how conference realignment or NIL deals shifted from controversial to normalized.

For Notre Dame, the SoFi partnership injects significant resources into the athletic department while aligning with a brand that can offer tangible value to student-athletes through financial literacy and support programs. Whether the patches become a seamless part of the Fighting Irish identity or remain a point of contention will play out on the fields and in the stands this season.

One thing is clear: College sports have entered a new commercial chapter. The programs that navigate it thoughtfully — balancing tradition with sustainability — will be the ones that thrive. Notre Dame, once again, finds itself at the forefront.

Go Irish!
