In a major boost for the Fighting Irish defense, four-star linebacker Roman Igwebuike from Chicago’s Mount Carmel High School committed to Notre Dame on July 11. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound prospect chose the Irish over finalists including Clemson, Indiana, Missouri, and Tennessee, citing head coach Marcus Freeman and new linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary. Igwebuike becomes Notre Dame’s lone linebacker commitment in the Class of 2027 so far, and the 22nd overall pledge in a recruiting class currently ranked No. 2 nationally. 

What Igwebuike Brings to the Defense

Igwebuike stands out as a long, rangy, and well-built linebacker with room to add power and explosiveness while potentially pushing past 230 pounds at the next level. He excels as a disciplined, wrap-up tackler who rarely misses and drives through ball carriers effectively. His agility shines in tight spaces: he changes direction smoothly, plants and redirects well, and drives downhill with good vision to exploit gaps. As a junior, he recorded 111 tackles while helping Mount Carmel win an Illinois state title. 

Earlier highlights include 115 total tackles, 13.5 TFL, 7 sacks, 2 INTs, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 PBUs in another standout season. He brings sideline-to-sideline range, physicality against the run, and versatility to play inside or outside in modern schemes. In Notre Dame’s defense under Freeman and Jean-Mary, he projects as a three-down Mike linebacker who can blitz, cover, and anchor the run game.
