In a move that blends family legacy with raw athletic potential, Notre Dame football has secured a major commitment from Pittsburgh’s James Halter. Halter is a four-star offensive lineman poised to anchor the Irish offensive line in the class of 2027. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound standout from Central Catholic High School announced his pledge to head coach Marcus Freeman and OL coach Joe Rudolph on Wednesday, capping a whirlwind recruitment that saw him turn down offers from Ohio State and Penn State.

Halter’s decision marks the fifth commitment for Notre Dame’s 2027 recruiting class, which is already off to a blistering start and currently ranks No. 9 nationally per Rivals.  As a legacy recruit, his father, Jordan Halter, played for the Irish from 1989 to 1993 under the great Lou Holtz. Halter, rated as the nation’s No. 8 interior offensive lineman and No. 154 overall prospect in the 2027 cycle by Rivals, brings positional versatility to the table.  On3 recruiting analyst Charles Power highlighted Halter’s film from his junior year, noting, “He brings positional versatility. There’s a shot that he could play anywhere on the offensive line. This is a really nice get for Notre Dame.”  Irish Breakdown’s Bryan Driskell (irishbreakdown.com) echoed that sentiment in a post-commitment breakdown, emphasizing Halter’s technique and upside as another legacy addition.

On the field, Halter is no stranger to high-stakes competition. A multi-sport athlete who also excels in lacrosse, he helped lead Central Catholic to a 10-1 record last season. As Notre Dame’s 2027 class swells, Halter’s arrival signals Freeman’s vision taking shape: a trench warrior with Pennsylvania grit, Irish bloodlines, and the potential to protect the next generation of quarterbacks in South Bend.

Go Irish!
