On Saturday, April 25, Notre Dame Stadium will once again come alive with the sights and sounds of Fighting Irish football as the program hosts the 95th edition of the Blue-Gold Game. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET, with the intra-squad scrimmage airing live on Peacock.
For fans hungry for their first glimpse of the 2026 team after a 10-2 regular season in 2025 that ended just short of the College Football Playoff, this spring showcase promises plenty of excitement. Head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff have spent the past several weeks installing schemes, sorting position battles, and building chemistry — all with national championship aspirations firmly in mind.
Returning Production
The Irish return an impressive amount of production heading into the fall, ranking No. 1 in the nation according to ESPN metrics. Quarterback CJ Carr, who threw for over 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2025, anchors the offense and enters his third year as the clear starter. Expect to see Carr connecting with familiar targets like standout wide receiver Jordan Faison, while the offensive line — which returns significant experience — looks to open lanes for a revamped running back group tasked with replacing the dynamic duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.
On the defensive side, Notre Dame brings back a veteran core that should rank among the best in the country. Linebacker Drayk Bowen (when healthy), defensive linemen like Boubacar Traore, and a secondary featuring playmakers such as cornerback Leonard Moore and safety Adon Shuler give Freeman’s defense the tools to dominate. New additions via the transfer portal, including defensive tackle Francis Brewu from Pitt and corner DJ McKinney from Colorado, add depth and experience to an already stout unit.
What to Look for
Spring practice has focused on refining the offense under coordinator Mike Denbrock, tightening up the trenches, and integrating young talent and transfers. While the Blue-Gold Game itself is a controlled scrimmage (with special rules to protect players and limit live tackling in some periods), it traditionally offers valuable insights into emerging stars, depth chart movement, and overall team speed and physicality.
For many in attendance — whether longtime season ticket holders or first-timers making the pilgrimage to South Bend — the day represents more than just football. It’s a celebration of the Notre Dame community, a chance to tailgate under the golden dome, and the unofficial start of the countdown to the 2026 regular season, which opens Sept. 6 against Wisconsin in the Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field.
See You There
Tickets remain available starting at $10, making it an accessible and family-friendly way to experience Notre Dame Stadium before the fall crowds arrive. Gates will open early, with plenty of fan activities planned around the game. While the final score of the Blue vs. Gold matchup often takes a backseat to player safety and evaluation, the real winners on April 25 will be the thousands of fans who get to cheer on the Irish up close. With elite returning talent, a motivated coaching staff, and sky-high expectations for a deep playoff run, this year’s Blue-Gold Game could offer the first signs that 2026 is shaping up to be a special season in South Bend.
Go Irish!
