Irish Blow Past Rice, 52-0, Behind Carr's Big Day and a Dominant Defensive Line
No. 3 Notre Dame needed just 14 seconds to make a statement in its home opener Saturday, and the Fighting Irish never let up from there, routing Rice 52-0 in front of a sold-out Notre Dame Stadium crowd.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
The Irish wasted no time turning the game into a rout. On the second play from scrimmage, Rice running back Davis Lane Jr. took a handoff and was immediately stripped by Adon Shuler, with Boubacar Traore scooping up the loose ball and returning it 24 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made it 7-0 before most fans had even settled into their seats.
From there, it was all Notre Dame. CJ Carr connected with Jordan Faison for touchdowns on back-to-back drives to push the lead to 21-0 by the end of the first quarter, and running back Nolan James Jr. followed with a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs on consecutive drives to make it 35-0. Carr added a third touchdown pass before halftime, finding Micah Gilbert on a well-designed redirect route from 39 yards out to make it 42-0 heading into the break. By that point, Rice had managed just 18 yards of total offense in the entire first half.
Player of the Game — Offense: CJ Carr
Carr was the engine of the Irish offense all afternoon. The quarterback threw for four touchdowns as Notre Dame overpowered Rice early and never looked back. He finished as the team's leading passer with 253 yards through the air, spreading the ball around to a wide range of targets. Notre Dame's passing attack got the ball out to a dozen different receivers on the day, and Carr was able to string together chunk play after chunk play doing it.
While the ground game struggled to find much rhythm — Notre Dame totaled just 118 yards on 32 carries, averaging 3.7 yards per attempt — Carr's efficiency and touchdown production through the air more than made up the difference, keeping Rice's defense off balance from start to finish.
Player of the Game — Defense: The Defensive Line
If Carr set the tone through the air, Notre Dame's defensive front set it up front. The Irish defensive line dictated the game from the opening snap, swarming Rice ball carriers and quarterback Jacurri Brown all afternoon. Brown, Rice's leading rusher on the day, managed only 32 yards on the ground as the Irish front consistently blew up run lanes before they could develop.
The pressure up front fed a relentless turnover parade. Notre Dame forced five fumbles, recovering four, a testament to the havoc created in the trenches and the effort chasing the football. The Irish defense also didn't allow a single tackle for loss on offense to worry about. Still, on the other side of the ball, it made life miserable for Rice's front, sacking Brown and forcing him into uncomfortable throws all day.
The result was Notre Dame's first shutout in nearly four years. It marked the defense's first shutout since a 44-0 win over Boston College back on November 19, 2022. It was also the second shutout of the Marcus Freeman era and the most lopsided of his tenure, surpassing that 2022 win over the Eagles.

The win was Notre Dame's fifth all-time over Rice without a loss, exactly what a College Football Playoff hopeful needed heading into the meat of its schedule. With Carr distributing the ball efficiently and a defensive line that's proving nearly impossible to run against, the Irish look every bit like a team building momentum at the right time of the season.
